Terms of Use

Terms for using the Timelocked website, documentation, downloads, project infrastructure, and community spaces.

Effective date: April 30, 2026

These Terms govern your use of the Timelocked website, documentation, download pages, releases, project infrastructure, and community spaces. By using those project resources, you agree to these Terms.

Timelocked is open-source software. Source code, binaries, and repository materials may also be governed by the license files included in the relevant repository or release. If these Terms conflict with an applicable open-source license for code, that license controls use of that code.

What Timelocked is

Timelocked is a local application for creating and unlocking timed-release files ending in .timelocked.

When a file is locked, Timelocked encrypts the content and protects the encryption key with sequential compute work. Unlocking requires performing that work on a computer.

Timelocked is not a cloud service. It does not require an account. The app is designed for offline use and does not include telemetry.

What Timelocked is not

Timelocked is not a legal service, financial service, estate-planning service, cybersecurity consulting service, custody service, backup service, dead-man switch, or guaranteed scheduling service.

It does not detect events, contact receivers, deliver files, unlock automatically, or unlock files at an exact date or time.

Website examples, documentation, and use cases are informational only. They do not replace professional advice.

You should not rely on Timelocked as your only protection for important files, funds, accounts, legal instructions, inheritance plans, emergency access, or safety-critical situations.

No professional advice

Examples involving inheritance, cryptocurrency, legal handoff, journalism, addiction management, security planning, or sensitive personal information are provided only to explain possible uses.

They are not legal, financial, estate-planning, tax, medical, cybersecurity, or other professional advice.

You are responsible for deciding whether Timelocked is appropriate for your situation and for getting qualified advice when needed.

User responsibility

You are responsible for your own use of Timelocked, including:

  • choosing an appropriate delay;
  • testing your setup before relying on it;
  • keeping backups of original files, .timelocked files, instructions, and app binaries where needed;
  • storing files and devices safely;
  • preserving enough information for future receivers to install and use the app;
  • downloading Timelocked only from official project sources that you trust;
  • understanding your own legal, financial, security, and operational risks.

If you lose both the original content and the .timelocked file, Timelocked cannot recover the content.

Timing limits

Timelocked does not unlock files at an exact date or time.

The delay is based on sequential compute work, not a server clock, calendar date, or online scheduler. Actual unlock time can vary based on hardware, power mode, thermal throttling, background load, and future hardware changes.

Delay estimates should be treated as estimates only. If timing matters, choose delays conservatively and test on relevant machines.

Security limits

Timelocked is designed so that, under its intended assumptions, opening a .timelocked file early requires doing the required sequential work.

However, Timelocked does not guarantee protection against every possible risk. In particular:

  • faster hardware may complete the work sooner than expected;
  • future cryptographic advances or practical quantum computers may weaken current assumptions;
  • malware or a compromised machine may defeat local security expectations;
  • Timelocked does not stop anyone from copying, deleting, withholding, or damaging a .timelocked file;
  • if the creator keeps the original file or encryption key, the creator can access the content immediately;
  • Timelocked does not prove who created a file;
  • Timelocked does not guarantee safety in coercion, theft, inheritance, or emergency scenarios.

Do not treat Timelocked as a complete security plan by itself.

Corruption and recovery limits

Timelocked may include redundancy intended to recover from some file corruption.

Recovery is not guaranteed. It can fail if damage is too large, affects required metadata, or exceeds the available redundancy.

Timelocked is not a substitute for backups.

Downloads and operating-system warnings

You should download Timelocked only from official project sources that you trust, including this website and the GitHub releases page for https://github.com/Caltanjun/timelocked.

Some Timelocked builds may trigger operating-system security warnings, especially if the app is unsigned. These warnings should not be ignored blindly. They are a reason to check the download source, project documentation, and release information before running the app.

Acceptable use

You agree not to use the website, documentation, downloads, project infrastructure, or community spaces to break the law, distribute malware, abuse others, infringe rights, or interfere with the project.

Timelocked is a local tool. You are responsible for the files you create, store, share, or unlock with it.

Intellectual property and licenses

The Timelocked name, website content, documentation, design, and project materials may be protected by copyright, trademark, or other rights.

Use of Timelocked source code, binaries, or other repository materials may be governed by the license files included in the relevant repository. If there is a conflict between these Terms and an applicable open-source license for code, the open-source license controls use of that code.

The website and documentation may link to third-party websites, papers, services, repositories, communities, or download platforms.

Those third-party resources are not controlled by Timelocked. You are responsible for reviewing their terms, privacy practices, and security before using them.

No warranties

The website, documentation, release information, download links, downloads, and app builds are provided as is and as available.

To the maximum extent permitted by law, the Timelocked project maintainers and contributors disclaim warranties of any kind, including warranties of accuracy, availability, security, compatibility, recoverability, exact timing, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.

Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, the Timelocked project maintainers and contributors will not be liable for losses or damages arising from use of, or inability to use, the website, documentation, downloads, or app.

This includes loss of data, loss of funds, failed or delayed unlocks, corrupted files, missed deadlines, failed backups, security incidents, legal or estate-planning outcomes, reliance on examples, or decisions made based on website or documentation content.

Changes to these Terms

These Terms may be updated from time to time. The effective date will show when the current version applies.

If you continue using the website, documentation, downloads, project infrastructure, or community spaces after the Terms change, you accept the updated Terms for that continued use.
